How to share a video from Google Drive
Select the video in Google Drive and click Share. Type the person's email, or under General access choose Anyone with the link. Then click Copy link and send it in a text, an email or a chat.
With Anyone with the link, people can open the video without signing in to a Google Account.
Share a Drive video, step by step
Share it with one person
- Go to Google Drive and select the video. To share several at once, hold Shift and select them.
- Click Share.
- Enter the person’s email address, or a Google Group.
- Choose Viewer, Commenter or Editor. Viewer is enough to watch.
- Keep Notify people ticked if you want Drive to email them. Then click Send.
Share it with a link
- Select the video and click Share.
- Under General access, click the down arrow.
- Choose Anyone with the link. On a work or school account you may also see your organization’s name, which limits the link to people there.
- Pick the role, click Copy link, then Done.
- Paste the link wherever you want to send it.
To keep people from downloading it, open the Share menu, click the gear icon for Settings, and turn off the option that lets viewers download, print and copy.
If the video won’t play
- A large video can take a while after you upload it before Drive will play it. If it says it isn’t ready, wait a few minutes and try again.
- Drive plays videos at up to 1920 x 1080. Bigger files still upload; they play at that size.
- Drive needs third-party cookies turned on in your browser to play videos.
- “Video is unplayable” can mean the file is damaged or in a format Drive doesn’t play. MP4 and MOV files with H.264 video and AAC audio play in Drive. Upload it again, or convert it.
Send your editor the clip, not the folder
A Drive link opens the file. If your editor needs one shot from a shoot, you still have to find which file holds it, and where in the file it starts. Google Drive’s search finds files by name, type and date, not by what happens in them.
clipcloud searches the videos in a Drive folder by what’s shown, said and written on screen. We typed “a starfish on orange coral”. The first result was a 77-second dive video named “Diving, seal, underwater”, opened at 0:51. The starfish is on screen for about 2 seconds, and its name never says starfish.
- Share the Google Drive folder with clipcloud. It only sees the folder you share.
- Search for the shot in plain words.
- Click Share on the clip, or select several clips in your library, and copy the link. Your editor opens it with no account. The link lasts 30 days.
- To send a moment instead of a whole clip, connect clipcloud to ChatGPT or Claude and ask for a share link to it. That link plays from the moment.
